Sustainability

at The Ranch

We believe that a healthy lifestyle is the foundation of a sustainable future for both the planet and ourselves. By focusing on the body, mind, and spirit, we are committed to creating a ripple effect that empowers guests with the knowledge and tools to sustain themselves, and the world around them, through healthy practices.

We draw inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds us. Our programs are designed to showcase the bounty of the earth with a menu that changes seasonally and features locally sourced ingredients. We invite our guests to explore the splendor of our surroundings through daily hikes, where they can witness the majesty of nature up close while learning about the history, biology, and geology of the trails they walk upon.

Our commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of our company, from our use of eco-friendly materials to our incorporation of sustainable practices into our operations. In Malibu and Hudson Valley, we go beyond diet and organic gardening by recycling 100% of our greywater, cultivating bees, promoting reforestation, and eliminating single-use plastic. These efforts are just a few examples of our commitment to sustainable practices and a healthy lifestyle.

We believe that small steps lead to big changes. We strive to preserve and protect the planet, and we're proud to be a part of the movement toward a greener future.

Our Plant Based Diet

Preserving the Planet One Plate at a Time

Our plant-forward menu at The Ranch is shaped by the changing seasons and showcases an abundance of organic and seasonal ingredients. Thoughtfully sourced from nearby farms or in Malibu our Regenerative Organic Certified® garden, we aim to eliminate the need to transport large quantities of food. Plant-based diets have also been proven to increase longevity and quality of life, while having a profound impact on the environment, requiring less land, water, and energy to produce.

Between both properties we serve nearly 60,000 plant-based meals annually which saves:

  • Nearly 280,000 lbs of CO2 emissions each year
  • 16 million gallons of water each year
  • Thousands of animals each year

Biodiversity

Local Community Support

The Ranch actively participates in protecting and conserving local biodiversity, through reforestation efforts, supporting local farms, contributing excess ingredients to local food banks, and removing litter from parklands. By partnering with organizations at each location, such as the Santa Monica Trails Council and the New York-New Jersey Trails Conference, we help to preserve and protect the hiking trails and biodiversity in these regions.  Our contributions to the local economy and environment are further amplified by our efforts to educate guests on sustainable practices and the impact of a plant-based diet on both health and the environment.

Through continuous education and support, we aim to empower our guests to become ambassadors of sustainability, fostering a culture of conscious living that extends beyond their stay at The Ranch. Our involvement in initiatives like Virtuoso’s Sustainability Council and the Ranch Global Wellness Scholarship Program highlights our dedication to making a positive impact on a global scale.

Clean Water Foundation

Water Water Water For All

In 2023, we established a partnership with Clean Water Foundation (CWF), a non-profit organization headquartered in California, dedicated to improving water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in developing countries. In accordance with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to ensure universal access to water for all, addressing the global water crisis was especially meaningful for Ranch founders Sue and Alex Glasscock and the company.

In the Spring of 2023, with a donation from The Ranch, Clean Water Foundation successfully implemented a transformative project in rural communities in Awasi, a remote village in Soroti Uganda. With this new well, 5,000 community members and neighboring villages now have access to safe and affordable drinking water services through piped, clean potable water. The provision of a piped water system promotes the overall well-being and health of the community, ensuring universal and equitable access to clean water while contributing to an increase in food production, higher attendance at school, and improved sanitation and hygiene practices.

Following this successful initiative, The Ranch plans to deepen their work with Clean Water Foundation by introducing The Ranch Global Wellness Scholarship Program. This inspiring opportunity is aimed at uplifting impoverished communities in Uganda by selecting exceptional individuals from marginalized communities and providing them with a life-changing opportunity to participate in an immersive educational curriculum at The Ranch Malibu.

The Ranch Life

The Ranch Malibu

Regenerative Organic Certified® Farming

Source-to-Fork at its Peak

Through regenerative farming, our garden in Malibu nurtures and enhances the landscape as a whole, creating greater fertility and biodiversity in the area and the surrounding ecosystem. This type of farming remedies pollution and waste, enhances the soil, air and water, and supports people, plants and animals with diverse edible landscapes.

This commitment to responsible farming extends to The Ranch Hudson Valley, where a new organic garden is being developed. Until then, the Hudson Valley kitchen sources local, organic produce, ensuring a fresh, high-quality, plant-based menu that supports local agriculture.

Embracing original beauty

Restoration Over Reconstruction

At our Hudson Valley location, we transformed a 40,000-square-foot manor, built in 1907, into a sanctuary for wellness. Our commitment was to preserve the property, respecting its architectural integrity rather than resorting to wasteful material use. Our dedicated interior design team worked meticulously to highlight the manor's extraordinary architectural elements, ensuring that each space within the estate reflects a seamless blend of its rich history with modern luxury and comfort. This careful preservation effort allows guests to experience the unique charm and heritage of the Hudson Valley in an environment that encourages wellness and sustainability.
